Chapter 18
Josh
Once Lissa was out of the driveway that morning, I immediately sequestered myself in my room downstairs. I had to figure out how I was going to tell her the truth before I could tell the rest of the pride what I was planning. I knew I would get little resistance from Jane and Louise, just as I knew it would be a battle with Suzie.
I was still downstairs when an alarm beeped from one of the security monitors. I glanced up to see what was going on and saw Lissa waiting for the gate to roll open. I glanced at my watch and grimaced. I wasn't expecting her home so soon, I needed more time to sort things out. With a deep breath to regain my composure, I headed back upstairs to meet her in the garage.
The door was just grinding to a stop when I made it through the tunnel. The morning light spilled inside as Lissa pulled the car into its usual spot, oblivious to my presence. Once she cut the engine she let out a wail that ripped at my soul. I was immediately on guard, not sure what to expect. I stepped out of the shadows and started walking to the car.
She saw me and immediately swiped at her tears before opening the car door and stumbling out. Her legs wobbled as she tried to stand up. I rushed to her, wrapping my arms around her to keep her from falling over. âJules? What happened?â
She looked up at me through teary eyes. âSorry, didn't see you there.â
I reached up with one hand and wiped a tear from her cheek, keeping my other hand firmly around her waist. âWhat's wrong?â
She trembled in my arms and buried her face in my chest. âI don't want to talk about it.â
I fought the urge to growl, knowing it would upset her more than she already was. Something must have happened with my brother, it was the only explanation for her distress. âOkay. I think you need to take a couple days off. You're exhausted and I'm worried about you.â
The next two days went by in a blur. I spent every minute with her, treating her to massages and romantic meals in her room. I never left her side, even as she slept I stood watch over her. I wanted her to know I was there for her whenever she was ready to confide in me.
By the end of the second day, I was exhausted and despite my best efforts she noticed. âJosh, you should go get some rest. Spending the day with me and going on patrol at night is too much.â
I hadn't kissed her in two days, they were two of the longest days of my life. The concern in her eyes and voice melted me to the core, threatening my resolve to be patient with her. âI'm fine.â
She emerged from the closet wearing a pair of shorts that revealed her long, shapely legs and a tank top that hugged every curve from her hips to her shoulders.
